Zoo Willemstad Curaçao
While the region was rich in water, trees and plants were planted in the 1940's in what was called the "Plantentuin", the botanical garden.

Architecture
A masterplan for Parke Tropikal (completed by mid-2016) will be a critical factor in steering the overall direction of maintaining and enhancing the zoo’s infrastructure, the visitor experience, and fundraising efforts. The implementation will be spread over four years.
History
In WWII the area of zoo Willemstad Curaçao was used first for military vehicle repair by the Dutch and Americans. Several years later animals have been introduced into the botanical garden. The display of animals being part of various private collections, was successful and over the years the botanical garden and the animal exhibits merged into a zoological garden, named Parke Tropikal. The zoo is a government-owned enterprise, and it is managed by the foundation Fundashon Parke Tropikal set up specifically to this aim, in 2000.
Visit 2011
During our visit to the zoo the deferred maintenance was something of an embarrassment.
