Mysore

Undoubtedly influenced by the European elite Maharaja Sri Chamarajendra Wodeyar has set up the Mysore zoo in 1892. Only the best is good enough for his summer palace zoo named Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens in 1909. Krumbeigal, a German horticulturist as well as a landscape architect, has designed the zoo and even the original animal enclosures do not look too cramped.

Mumbai

On a hot day in May we bought tickets priced 4 rupees at Victoria Station, and entered the suburban train, a sweaty pleasure despite the lack of window glass and despite the open doors. The Mumbai city zoo at Victoria Gardens (Jijamata Udyan) is within walking distance from the Byculla railway station. Officially named Veerbaj Jeejamata Udyan zoo, also known as Byculla zoo in Victoria Gardens, currently named Jijamata Udyaan and alternatively known as Rani Baugh or Ranee Baug.

Vandalur

The original 19th-century zoo Madras (1855) has been replaced by the Vandalur zoo aka the Arignar Anna Zoological Park near Chennai. After Independence Madras became Chennai. In 1975, the old zoo moves out of the city.

New Delhi

Spreading across 214 acres the National Zoological Park aka Delhi Zoo is located on the Mathura Road next to the famous old fort Purana Qila. In 1956, 46 years after zoo VIP Carl Hagenbeck died, his grandson Carl-Heinrich Hagenbeck (Germany) and Major Weinman (Colombo, Sri Lanka) designed this national zoological park from scratch on. Jawaharlal Nehru, however, had conceived the whole idea of opening a zoo.

Aurangabad

Situated in Siddharth Garden the small Aurangabad Zoo is an oasis in a dingy, crowded and dirty city. There are separate admission charges (just a few rupees) for both the garden and the zoo.

Madras Crocodile Farm is located approximately 15 km north of Mamallapuram. Crocodile Bank Bus stop in front of the farm.
